Commercial Underwriter
Commercial Portfolio Underwriter, Commercial Banking
Southern California | Orange County, San Diego or Riverside County
We are working with a relationship-focused commercial bank that is adding Commercial Underwriters across Southern California. This is a strong opportunity for a commercial credit professional who wants meaningful ownership of a portfolio, exposure to a broad mix of C&I and CRE transactions, and the ability to work closely with experienced Relationship Managers rather than operate in a purely transactional underwriting environment.
The bank is open to different levels of experience and candidates in Orange County, San Diego and Riverside County and is hiring for multiple positions.
The Role:
The Portfolio Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting and monitoring an assigned commercial loan portfolio, with a primary focus on renewals, modifications, annual reviews, covenant monitoring and ongoing credit risk management. You will also support new loan underwriting as needed and work directly with Relationship Managers, Credit Administration and other members of the commercial banking team.
This is not a narrow spreading role. The bank is looking for someone who can evaluate the full credit, understand the borrower and business, identify risk, make sound recommendations and communicate clearly with both internal partners and clients.
Credit Exposure:
The portfolio includes a broad range of commercial lending, including:
- C&I lines of credit and working capital facilities
- Equipment financing
- Business acquisitions and partner buyouts
- Owner-occupied commercial real estate
- Investor commercial real estate
- Construction lending
- Multifamily, industrial, retail and hospitality properties
- SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 transactions
- Government-guaranteed lending programs
- Asset-based and borrowing-base facilities
What You’ll Be Doing:
You will manage the credit side of assigned relationships throughout the life of the loan, including:
- Underwriting loan renewals, modifications and annual reviews
- Spreading and analyzing business and personal financial statements and tax returns
- Completing global cash flow and debt service analysis
- Evaluating liquidity, leverage, profitability, repayment capacity and collateral
- Monitoring borrower reporting requirements and financial covenants
- Identifying deteriorating credit trends and recommending risk rating changes when appropriate
- Preparing problem loan reporting for criticized or downgraded relationships
- Supporting new loan requests and preparing comprehensive credit approval memorandums
- Reviewing loan structure, collateral, guarantor support and repayment sources
- Working directly with Relationship Managers to resolve credit questions and keep transactions moving
- Coordinating with loan documentation, legal and operations teams following approval
- Maintaining strong credit files and supporting internal, external and regulatory reviews
What They’re Looking For:
The ideal candidate will have approximately 5+ years of commercial underwriting or commercial credit experience within a bank or similar lending institution.
Strong candidates should have:
- Experience underwriting both C&I and commercial real estate
- Strong business financial statement and tax return analysis
- Experience analyzing personal financial statements and guarantor tax returns
- Strong financial spreading and cash flow analysis skills
- The ability to independently assess credit risk
- A collaborative style and comfort working directly with commercial bankers
A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or a related discipline is preferred. Formal bank credit training is also a plus.
Experience with platforms such as nCino, Salesforce or similar commercial lending systems is helpful but not required.
Why This Opportunity:
This bank takes a relationship-driven approach to commercial banking and offers exposure to a wide variety of credit rather than keeping underwriters boxed into one narrow product type.
For someone who enjoys the analytical side of banking but also wants visibility, interaction with experienced lenders and ownership of their portfolio, this could be a very good next step.
